ADOPT A RUFFED LEMUR

The black and white ruffed lemur is the largest of the “true” lemurs measuring a total of four feet in length (including its two foot long tail). They have soft black and white fur and a ruff of hair which covers each of their ears. The black and white colouring is different on each animal with some individuals even having different patters on the left and right sides of their body.

Confined to the Island of Madagascar black and white ruffed lemur is found in the humid rain forests where it lives in family groups of around 5 individuals and feeds on a variety of sweet fruits. Territory is marked using scent but also through vocal calls which warn other lemurs that a particular area is taken.

The ruffed lemur is most active at dusk, preferring to spend the daylight hours curled up in hollow trees. They are excellent climbers, who can move swiftly through the trees as it searches for fruit, rarely descending to ground level.

The IUCN lists the species as critically endangered with numerous threats to it survival.

Threats to Black and White Ruffed Lemurs

Despite being one of the largest species of lemur, the Black and white ruffed lemur faces predation from several animals including the Henst’s Goshawk and the Fossa. It is during the nesting season that the risk is greatest.

Furthermore they face threats from human induced habitat loss and destruction. Around 80% of Madagascan forest has been lost as a result of human activity. Specifically, wood is taken for fuel and construction for a rapidly expanding human population.
