The bush dog is a rare and unusual canid (the family which includes domestic dogs), which looks more like a badger or an otter than a member of the canine family. They are found throughout the tropical forests of Central and Southern America from Panama to the Misiones province in Northeastern Argentina.
Despite this extensive range, the bush dog is very rare and was once thought to be extinct, as it was fossils found in caves in Brazil that led to the discovery of the species. The IUCN lists the species as near threatened and estimates suggest there are fewer than 15,000 mature individuals left in the wild, making their future uncertain. Although exact numbers are unknown scientists believe that with current trends, the population stands to decrease by 10% over the next decade.
A lone bush dog usually hunts rodents such as agouti and Paca but being social animals, it is more common to see them hunting in packs of 10-12 individuals which enables them to bring down large prey including rheas. Visibility is poor but the animals are very social, using a variety of whines and calls to stay in touch with other members of the pack. They usually hunt during the day, taking shelter in hollow logs and trees as well as the burrows of other animals. Furthermore they are well adapted to swimming, with skin growing between their toes giving them “webbed” feet which allow them to move effortlessly through the many rivers of the rain forest.
Threats To The Bush Dog
- Human interference has led to extensive habitat destruction, fragmenting the populations making it much more difficult for the animals to breed successfully
- Very little research has been carried out, meaning we have very little understanding about Bush dog needs, an understanding that is vital for conservation efforts to succeed.
As a “near threatened” species, the bush dog is not yet at risk of extinction but the habitat loss and lack of understanding mean it is highly likely the species will become threatened by extinction in the near future.
