The black and white colobus is an old world monkey, closely related to the red colobus monkey. The word Colobus is taken from the an old Greek word meaning “mutilated” or “cut short” which describes the animals thumbs which are merely stumps.
Black and white colobus monkeys are herbivorous, feeding on a variety of leaves and fruit. This makes them extremely important for spreading seeds as their rather sloppy eating habits helps spread seeds across the forest and their digestive systems have allowed them to eat plants and leaves inedible to other species. They are found in the riverine forests and wooded grasslands of Africa but seem to prefer the higher density forests.
A family group is usually made up of nine individuals including a single male and several females and despite the adults being predominantly black, babies are born completely white, developing their black colouring as they age. A family group is extremely social and there have even been cases of other females within a group helping to care for the young.
Threats to the Colobus Monkey.
The beauty of the Colobus monkey’s fur meant it was hunted ruthlessly so the fur could be used to make a variety of dance costumes and hats. This ruthless hunting has led to the complete disappearance of the species in some areas.
Hunting is still a threat to the species, however it is no longer the main threat; Human populations are increasing and so to is our need for land, fuel and building materials. The forests of Africa are being harvested at an alarming rate and it is this habitat loss which now poses the main threat to the survival of the species.
