Meerkats are small mammals that live in burrows and are native to the harsh environment of the Kalahari Desert. As members of the mongoose family they are renowned for their tenacity and determination when hunting for food.
Threats To Meerkats In The Wild
- Meerkats weigh less than 1kg and are preyed upon by Jackals and large birds of prey
- Diseases such as tuberculosis are quite common in wild populations;
- Humans are encroaching and building on the valuable habitat;
- Large numbers of animals are taken from the wild and sold as pets.
