ADOPT A PANDA

The IUCN has classified Giant Pandas as endangered and their reports indicate there are only between 1,000 -2,000 left in the wild.

THREATS TO PANDAS

  • Habitat destruction remains the greatest threat and has caused population fragmentation. The panda’s range has been restricted as trees have been cut down by illegal logging operations and land clearances to make way for farms.
  • Pandas rely on bamboo for food. This bamboo is subject to a periodic “flower then die off” cycle. Before humans destroyed their habitat, pandas could move freely with the cycles of the bamboo but are now confined to small areas by the cultivation but humans.
  • Poaching was once  a serious problem but as markets for panda skin have diminished due to the severe penalties for both poaching and trading the demand for them has fallen. However, pandas are sometimes caught in traps set by hunters seeking deer.

HOW YOU ARE HELPING

When you adopt a panda the money from your purchase helps conservation efforts by:

  • Increasing patrols to deter and catch poachers and illegal loggers.
  • Funding campaigns to expand the protected areas allowing pandas more room to move with the cycle of the bamboo.
  • Educating local communities, enabling them to manage nature reserves and make use of the forests in a sustainable way.
