Estimates suggest there are less than 70,000 orangutans left in the wild compared to over 300,000 in 1900.
Threats To Orangutans
- Habitat destruction to make room for palm oil plantations, mines and human settlements;
- Illegal logging and fires also destroy huge swathes of valuable rainforest;
- The illegal pet trade sees mothers killed so their young can be sold as pets;
- Smaller habitat makes conflict with people more common and locals often kill orangutans out of fear.
