With the world’s forests suffering huge decline year on year, news that the European parliament has approved a new law will be seen as progress towards better protection for forests. The new law will keep illegal wood products out of the European market.
If adopted the new law will mean that from 2012 companies importing wood products will have to show evidence of the products’ country of origin and its legality. Any products with no evidence to support their importation will be banned from the EU market.
No steps have yet been taken to include printed products in this law, nor has there been and indication of sanctions that await those importing illegal products but there is definitely cause for optimism. A severe blow has been dealt to those who wish to profit from illegal logging and it paves the way for a European timber industry based on sound legal principles.
