Sumatran tiger fact-file

Name: Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae)

Status: Critically endangered

Description: The Sumatran tiger is the smallest of the tiger subspecies but this makes it perfectly adapted to its jungle environment. Their stripes are narrower than other species which helps with camouflage. They also have webbing between their toes which helps them move quickly when swimming.

Habitat: Ranges from lowland forest to mountain forests.

Location: Found exclusively on the Island of Sumatra in Indonesia.

Length: Males average 240cm (94 in)    Females average 220cm (87 in)

Weight: Males 100-140 kg (220-308 lbs)   Females 75-110 kg (165-242 lbs)

Lifespan: 10-15 years in the wild 16-20 years in captivity

Diet: Sumatran tigers hunt medium sized prey such as wild boar, and several species of deer. They also feed on smaller prey such as monkeys and fish. There have been occasions when Orangutans have been preyed on but this is rare because orangutans spend much of their time high in the trees.

Behaviour: The Sumatran tiger is a solitary animal save for a mother and her cubs. This is an evolutionary characteristic because a single tiger will be able to hunt more effectively in the dense forest than a group.

Pregnancy and cubs: A Sumatran tigress will give birth to 2 or 3 cubs which are blind and weigh just 1 kg. They feed on their mother’s milk for around 6-8 weeks, after which they begin to eat meat. This continues until the cubs are around 18 months old, when they begin to make their own kills and learn to look after themselves.
