Tiger conservation roars on

A meeting in Bali in mid July paved the way for a new chapter in Tiger conservation. 13 countries came together to lay the foundations for the all-important Tiger summit, which takes place in Russia in September.

The 13 countries where tigers range put forward their own proposals on how to double wild tiger numbers by 2022.  Leading experts from around the world were also at the meeting, which was a precursor to the main Summit to be held in St Petersburg in mid September.

What did the meeting achieve?

Each of the 13 countries has its own plans for increasing tiger numbers and these plans will all be placed into a “Global Tiger Recovery Program” which is the main plan on how to achieve a goal of doubling tiger numbers by 2022. This will be presented to government ministers at the Tiger Summit for approval.

There is still a long way to go yet in tiger conservation but this meeting was a huge leap forward for wild tigers and if the Tiger Summit can achieve its goals then wild tigers can look forward to a much brighter future.
